Quarter page advert for Roots Hair Studio. Will be appearing in July’s edition of East Grinstead Living. I’ve introduced some purple elements to tie in with the salons relaunch and new colour scheme, happening this month.

In groups produce a short play, to be performed on the opening night of the exhibition.

The silhouette crafted performance is based on a true story of a man who gets captured during WW2. After trying to escape he is ordered to be shot, but a German soldier sets him free.

An addition to the observation projects, in small groups produce a short film about observing and being observed.

Not commercially viable to have ten 24hr channels – not cost effective – generalization needed.

Whilst researching I realized that there was not an ultimate internet TV station for the younger generation, despite internet viewing being highest numbers in younger generation of 18 – 25 year olds.

Who we are

A multiplatform internet TV station targeting viewers with the age range of 15 – 25 years olds; young adults that have outgrown the High School Musical generation, but do not quite fit into the mundane grown up world of a media fed society just yet. Ten is a youth digital network that will boast multiplatform connections; through podcasts, mobile downloads, and a presence on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Bebo, Youtube and Myspace. The site itself will feature Internet chat rooms, discussion boards, interactive games and webzines. With no political leanings and endorsements to adhere to, Ten is a truly independent voice for the next generation.

The stations primary focus is utilizing the skills of students and young people. Run entirely by youth’s aged 15 – 25, Ten is a means of showcasing their skills whilst gaining invaluable experience. Navigating around Ten and selecting areas of interest couldn’t be simpler with it’s division into ten subcategories covering a wide range of current social issues.

Why Ten?

The name Ten relates to our number of subdivisions. It also represents the number of different ages targeted by the channel.

What we do

Our aim is to provide informative but engaging programs, in a format easily understood from a younger perspective. We are confident that this goal can easily be achieved, as the station is to be run entirely by the younger generation. Ten’s content is to be provided by the audience, who will submit proposals and footage to the governing body; made up from young entrepreneurs. This level of audience participation will make the viewers feel more involved and in control of shaping the station. All logos, idents, web presence and promotional material are to be designed by young creative’s.

In addition competitions and surveys run by relevant companies will be publicized on the site, as will market research; viewers will be paid in the form of tokens to participate, which then can be exchanged for prizes such as CD’s and money off vouchers. Companies will be given the opportunity to set up online test panels for new consumer products aimed at the age range.  All creative competitions will be listed, in order to make young people more aware of  the opportunities available to them.

Boy Zone – Channel aimed at boys. Featuring gadgets, gaming, sports, fashion.

Leisure/travel film and promote local events sent in by kids involved.

Culture Vulture – Featuring a different focus every show. Focus on ethnicity, popular culture, interests such as clubs, after school  activities.

Sofa Sloths– cartoons, short films and animations sent in by viewers

Why we do it

Ten gives the younger generation opportunities to get their work seen and gets their voices heard whilst providing invaluable work experience in their chosen career paths. Any profits from the station will go directly into funding youth projects. Our aim is to help provide a better future and a more culturally aware younger generation.

What makes us different?

Ability to download all shows as podcasts for free, 24hr on demand playback, no limit to archive times, unlike other channels such as iplayer. Run completely by younger generation, young entrepreneurs. Completely independent  – no connection to existing corporations  – true voice of the younger generation. Funded completely by advertising, no subscription charges. As an internet station cost is low, kids work as volunteers to get their names known in the fields that they are interested in. No bought in programs – all homegrown talent. TV shows featured run by drama students competitions for extras/ actors. Work closely with charities such as the Princes trust to provide better opportunities for young people. .

Produce a graphic project about the contents of your home.

Instead of  thinking of objects that I could include in this project which hold sentimental value, I thought about why we value objects in this way. Do we really need them? Do they make out lives any easier/better? I considered what if we fill our lives and homes with all these consumer products which in today’s capitalist society we are told we need, are we any happier? It is family and the memories which are more important surely? What makes a house a home? For different people the answer to this question differs. I personally don’t really think I have anything which I hold of great value, I could quite happily live without these things. For many years I lived in rented accomodation surrounded by objects which weren’t my own, so I guess I learnt to grow detached from items. I think that it is what goes on inside the home that counts, not the contents.

I researched into home improvement advertising by companies such as Homebase and Ikea and found a campaign by Ikea dealing with a similar idea.

I like the idea of creating a minimalist poster in a constructivist style. I drew out the plan of my flat and created typography from the shapes of my furniture/ floor plan.

To create a movie title sequence, with an accompanying ten minute film.

I began by researching the opening sequences by Saul Bass. I love the retro feel to them, this lead me to looking at other retro title sequences, such as Pink Panther and Clockwork Orange.

These were some of my favorites. The music really helps to set the tone of the preceding film. This is something that I will have to think about when producing my own.

Even though this has a more modern feel to it, this title sequence is obviously heavily inspired by Saul Bass, particulary in the way that the illustrations flow seamlessly to the next clip with the use of line.

I also love this title sequence, even though it is not the look I am aiming for, I like the seamless flowing effect between graphics and the use of casino patterns.

I’m currently freelancing for a theatre company, at the moment i’m creating a poster and flyers for their upcoming murder mystery night which is set in a fifties Jazz club. Researching into the work of Saul Bass has inspired me to produce artwork in a similar way, the idea of a retro detective fits so well with his style. This may be something that I incorporate into my title sequence, possibly along with a recent private investigator illustration created for my Dream Dictionary project. For this illustration I drew inspiration from retro detective characters, such as Inspector Gadget.

These are a few ideas i’m working on for the murder mystery night.

A few rough sketches and ideas of what some of my stills might look like, I developed these into a storyboard.

A few of my objects drawn out in Illustrator. The Saul Bass style lines that I will be using and various other shapes that form objects can easily be created in After Effects. I want to create everything for my movie from scratch if possible.

Wednesday 28th April 2010

Unfinished version that I showed in class today. It has taken me around sixty hours to get this far! There’s still a few additional parts to add, and I need to sort out any jumpy bits.

I decided on using the font Hitchcock, I have previously been working with more modern looking sans serifs, but I felt that this font added more of a Saul Bass retro feel to it. With the main storyboard complete, I started to think about what type of music I felt would fit with my title sequence. The jazzy feel to Anatomy Of A Murder is close to the sound that I want to go for in my detective film. I adapted a loop called Mystery in Logic that fitted with what I was aiming for; it helps set the scene for my detective searching for clues.

I worked on the flow between the clips so that it would flow seamlessly,  adding additional items that wiped across the screen or opacities that helped merge new objects. I also added a turbulent displace filter onto the rectangles to give a more imperfect hand drawn feel to them.

I decided on the name Dreams and Vengeance, as my title sequence features a woman dreaming of an investigator who tracks down a murderer.

As my title sequence was more of an extended version and had taken me so long to complete I hadn’t planned on adding additional film footage to the end. However, I decided to use film footage from the murder mystery night. I cut the down the original footage from over half an hour to around ten minutes and added a old  film effect in iMovie to reduce the colour. Ideally I would have liked to film at the dress rehearsal, so I could have got closer to the action and varied my camera angles.

I’m unable to load the full movie title sequence and footage to youtube, as it’s over the maximum length. Here is the title sequence part, minus the audio.

Part two

I looked at retro brands, some of which have ceased to exist and dug out my photos from my visit to the museum of packaging and brands from last year.

I actually prefer this retro branding for sprite.

I moved on from branding slightly, and started focusing on brand characters.  The mascots seem to have more of an impact on nostalgia than aesthetically pleasing design. I looked at the Tropicana girl, Um-Bongo, the Milkybar kid, Hovis boy and the caramel bunny. I discovered that some of these characters are currently being reinstated as part of the brands advertising campaigns in the future, which proves that there is a strong sense of nostalgia still connected to these icons.

The Tetley tea folk had a range of collectable merchandise until they were shelved for a more modern campaign.

Like the tea folk, the golly had a huge range of correctable merchandise. I decided to focus on this character, as in order to bring it back changes would have to be made to the design due to it’s supposed connection with racism. Robertson’s creator has always strongly denied this, he used the golly as it resembled a type of doll that mothers used to make for their children.

I decided to transform the golly into marmalade man, still recognizable as the original character, but having an orange for a head. I played around with various fonts similar to those used on retro packaging and adverts.

I decided to use Robertson’s official logo on my poster, as I could not find a decent copy of the logo anywhere, or the exact font I used Italian old style MT bold , then added tails to the R’s to match it up with the existing logo.

I tied a few different font’s for the tagline ‘It’s jolly good’  a  pun on Robertson’s previous tagline ‘It’s golly good!’ before deciding on Aspire demi-bold.

FINAL OUTCOME

To design a container for a chosen profession/ lifestyle.

I decided to design a Feng Shui container. I wanted to construct the container by using an origami method, as both originated from the same place. I experimented with various different origami patterns, and made up some of my own.

Even though the 3D origami containers looked beautiful they would be easily damaged, therefore hard to transport. I decided to go for a flat origami design.

I wanted to include the bagua map on the front of the design, so that it is the container itself that is the product.

THREE WEEK PROJECT

“Quotes” Poster

1.Design a purely typographic A1 poster based  around the selected lucky dip quote. Choose a typeface sympathetic to the quote. Include the typeface’s 26 letters, numbers, ligatures and punctuation marks.

2. A3 Exhibition publicity poster – an exhibition of these to be displayed in the design studio. The design emphasis should be on the place and setting.

3. Essay – two paragraphs on an A4 sheet. To contain information about the quote and reasons behind the chosen typeface. Include info about the type’s designer and it’s foundry, your own thoughts and opinions about the typeface.

Visual argument in contemporary culture

Design a poster campaign or web presence that encourages a passion/belief/viewpoint from the following categories -

Drugs, religion, the liberal consumer market, the identity and representation of women, sexual freedom or the unrestricted male.

I researched into the meaning of my quote. Basically it means that you have to sacrifice your own knowledge so that everyone’s beliefs are the same within that religious sector. I began to think about how I could transfer this into a purely typographic poster, after reading a brief history about the author of the quote, Lewis Perelman I discovered that he was a mathematician, so perhaps I could construct an image from type, by the method of ASCI art.

My first thoughts for the second brief was to select either the religious category, or the liberal consumer market.

I wanted to select something that would grab peoples attention, especially the younger generation, I thought about what interested them, and decided to create a poster in a culture-jamming way; using an existing brand/advert to promote an alternative one. I thought that Apple would be a good choice.
